With summer approaching and temperatures already rising across Central Florida, local audiologists are urging hearing aid users to take extra precautions to protect their devices from the season’s unique challenges.

Dr. Kristen Weinbaum, audiologist at Precision Hearing in Clermont, says the combination of heat, humidity, and outdoor activities can lead to common—but avoidable—issues for hearing aid users.

“We see an uptick in repairs and moisture-related problems every summer,” Dr. Weinbaum explained. “Hearing aids are sophisticated, sensitive devices, and Florida’s climate can be particularly tough on them if people don’t take the right steps.”

Moisture and Sweat a Top Concern

Central Florida’s infamous humidity doesn’t just make the air feel thick—it can also seep into hearing aids and damage their internal components. Sweat from outdoor exercise or even just walking around in the summer sun can also take its toll.

Dr. Weinbaum recommends using a dehumidifier or drying kit nightly to keep hearing aids in peak condition. “It’s a small step that can significantly extend the life of your devices,” she said.

Swimming and Water Activities Pose a Risk

For many Floridians, summer means time in the pool or on the lake. But hearing aids and water don’t mix. Even a quick dip or splash can be enough to cause serious damage.

“Always take them out before swimming or showering,” said Dr. Weinbaum. She also suggests keeping a carrying case handy to store the devices safely.

Heat and Sunlight Can Be Harmful

Leaving hearing aids in a hot car or placing them in direct sunlight—like on a towel at the beach—can warp plastic components or cause batteries to leak. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures may also reduce battery life or interfere with performance.

“Just like you wouldn’t leave your phone on the dashboard in July, you shouldn’t leave your hearing aids there either,” Dr. Weinbaum warned.

Dust and Sand Another Local Threat

Between Clermont’s popular outdoor trails and the nearby beaches, dust and sand can easily get into hearing aids, clogging microphones and speakers.

Routine cleaning with a soft brush can help prevent damage. “Don’t forget to clean them, especially after a day outdoors,” she added.

Protect Your Hearing Investment

For many, hearing aids are more than just a device—they’re a lifeline to the world around them. Taking a few extra steps this summer can mean the difference between clear conversations and costly repairs.
